Hi,
I'm looking for some cheap 6DOF input device.
I already bought the NaturalPoint TrackIR, and looking
at gyroscopic devices, like, I've been told, the one that will be included with the Nintendo Revolution.
What options do I have?
thanx ;)

Re: Cheap 6Dof input device
Hi Seb,
Could you please give us information about what you're planning to do with the device? For what kind of project are you planning to buy it?
Thanks

Precisions
I'm investigating cheap/consumer grade 6 DOF trackers.
I have bought Natural Point TrackIR and was really positively impressed by their technology.
But as it is based on an IR Camera, there's the occlusion pbm.
Moreover you can only track one object.
They have another product, OptiTrack, with which you can track with
multiple cameras. But still only one object (with 6DOF), and there's not communication between cameras (yet).
So is there anything worth looking at, to track at least 2 objects with 6DOF? I don't need a lot a space covering, but the bigger the better ;)
Precision isn't a top priority as long as the results are smooth and quite fast.
Are gyroscopic mice an option?
What else ?
thanx in advance ;)

I'm not a specialist of cheap tracking systems, but...
I'm not a specialist of cheap tracking systems: all the searches I did before (for my lab) was for standard quality devices like the Flock of Birds, MotionStar, ...
Nevertheless, I heard good things about the Polhemus Patriot. It is considered as a cheap system for what it does. It haves what you want (6 DOF, 2 sensors, 60Hz per sensor), but maybe it's too expansive for what your planning to do: around 2000$US. I will try to obtain more information about cheap systems on the next days.
Are gyroscopic mice an option?
It depends what you're planning to do. For what kind of project are you looking for a tracking system?

Consumer
I'm just looking at what's available at consumer price, and the Patriot doesn't fit in (yet ;)
I'd use a gyroscopic mouse for a simple FPS.
I wouldn't need absolute precision, but a low latency and a good stability. I never had the opportunity to test one, do you have any idea how those perform ?
thanx ;)

cheap 6 dof tracking
Optitrack can offer you the position of individual markers. I doesn't care whether the markers are on a single object or not. If you're doing body tracking, that's just fine. I don't know about the current state of their software, but it didn't offer too many features for pose estimation of the solid objects. You'll have to come up with your own pose estimation of the individual objects. You can look at the technique "projective invariant pose estimation" from CWI which they (and we) use in the Personal Space Station.
